Barrel Jellyfish

Rhizostoma pulmo commonly known as the barrel jellyfish. Rhizostoma pulmo despite its intimidating size, is harmless to humans. It can vary from 40-90 cm in diameter and the origin of its common name is fairly obvious…it looks like a big dustbin lid when it washes up and like a barrel when its floating freely. It is commonly found off the eastern and southern coasts of South Africa as well as the western and southern coasts of the British Isle.
